Why Elafonisi beach sand is pink?
Another characteristic that distinguishes this beach from the others is the extraordinary pink colored sand. Many small pieces of broken shells contained in the sand are the reason the beach is some places has pinkish color.

The beach is organized in scattered places offering sunbeds, umbrellas and there’s a cantine as well. Luckily, the area has under Natura 2000 protection for the last years and the beach hasn’t been exploited.
If you wish to explore the islet of Elafonisi you want find any beach, but you will be able to visit a small chapel dedicated to St. Irene and the memorial cave.
Another place worth visiting in the nearby area, is Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, located 6km north of Elafonisi beach.
Access
Driving from Chania city takes about 1hr 30minif you choose the route from Elos village. You can also go by bus, by boat (from Palaiochora) or with an organized tour.
